Cook your bread sauce from scratch this Christmas

Bread sauce is a delicious and popular condiment eaten at Christmas time. It's a great accompaniment to Turkey and roast vegetables. However is it something that people rarely make from scratch and often resort to a ready-made sauce or packet mix.

Here is a lovely, simple recipe from the BBC Good Food, showing how easy it is, so why not choose to branch out and make yours from scratch this year?

  • 600ml milk
  • 50g butter
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 6 cloves
  • 6 peppercorns
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 thyme sprigs
  • 100g white breadcrumbs
  • 4 tbsp single cream or mascarpone
  • pinch nutmeg, freshly grated
